Chekhov used to say, I have my own theater, and people assumed he was talking about the Moscow Art Theatre, but then Chekhov would tap his forehead and say, . . . in here. |

First there was . . . America's New War Strikes Back! A stage/screenplay By Shamrock McShane Featuring Gregg Jones and Jake Seymour At Galleriebob, February 22 - March 9, 2002 America's New War Strikes Back a stage/screenplay by Shamrock McShane "A word of explanation. I've never written anything like this before. There are no characters, as such. Just voices, countless voices. And they say the most outrageous things. You are almost certain to be offended. I can't find any way around that. It's about war, and war, by definition, is offensive, is in fact comprised of many offensives. And so is this piece. We are attempting to perform this piece as one would wage a war. And so the plan is to mount the work in stages, just like a war. You don't unleash all your forces in the first battle. And so I begin with one voice, along with an original soundtrack composed by Tom Miller. Tomorrow night we'll add another voice, that of my comrade Gregg Jones, and then more and more, as other elements are added - video, text, musicians, technicians, designers, dancers, all of it culminating in a phantasmagoria, a motion picture stage show directed by Jessica Arnold. So stay tuned." Shamrock McShane at Galleribob, February 2, 2002 Music for America's New War Strikes Back! by Tom Miller (available on CD)
From the opening stage direction:
"The playing
area overlaps the audience like a wave, creating islands of spectators
and scenes in pools of colored light, against a background of images
and
text created by visual artists, accompanied by musicians and sound
artists,
embodied by dancers and actors. Or, it may be the voice of a single
bard.
But two bards are better than one. Alternating voices give life to the
words that follow that flow from the mouths of nameless people, just
people.
What actually happens on stage might best be indicated by the white
space
between blocks of text: Movement, music, and drama in harmony and
counterpoint
fill the white space. The text indicates words that may be spoken as
dialogue
or monologue, overlapping the action, or appearing as subtitles."
This is a drama
about people
caught up in events that are happening right now. An epic unfolds
before
our eyes. When we look away, we hear it. When we drown it out, we enact
it. It penetrates our consciousness on every level.
Jessica Arnold, famed writer-director of A View of the Dome, Independence, Cheese, CFI, and Bash, now brings us the most eccentric off-the-wall impressionistic expressionistic vision of our own reality we've ever seen.
